The Finnish Institute of International Affairs -FIIA- hosted the Pacific Alliance seminar coordinated by the Embassy of Chile.
Dr. Detlef Nolte, Director of Latin American Studies at the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and Dr. Mario Torres, Director of the European Institute of International Studies (IEEI) were the invited speakers. The academic experts presented the most relevant characteristics of the nature, advantages and challenges of the Alliance within the global political context. The Ambassador of Chile to Finland, Mr. Eduardo Gálvez, opened the seminar and introduced the most relevant aspects of the Chilean Pro Tempore Presidency of the Pacific Alliance during this last year. Dr. Mikael Wigell, senior researcher at FIIA, opened the discussion panel and highlighted the importance of the Pacific Alliance as a platform to the Asia-Pacific region.
The FIIA is the most important research institute in Finland. It was established by the Finnish Parliament in 2006 from where it gets its funding. The FIIA operates as an independent think tank, although its researchers carry out external collaborations with academia, the media and public authorities in the formulation of policies and strategies. The institute publishes the magazine Ulkopolitiikka distributed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
