Undersecretary Schmidt meets with Canadian Minister for the Americas

Deputy Foreign Minister Fernando Schmidt met today with Canada’s Foreign Minister for the Americas and Consular Affairs, Ms. Diana Ablonczy, who was accompanied by an entourage. The meeting reviewed bilateral relations.

Over the weekend, Minister Ablonczy attended the celebrations of the Tenth Anniversary of the Inter- American Democratic Charter in Valparaiso.

The issues addressed at the meeting, relating to the fruitful bilateral relationship, included the future visit of H.E. Sebastián Piñera, President of Chile, to Canada; the progress of negotiations for the improvement of the Chile-Canada Free Trade Agreement and the forthcoming political consultation meeting, to be chaired by the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Fernando Schmidt in Ottawa before the end of this year.

Hemispheric affairs discussed in depth at the meeting included the next ECLAC meeting, whose Pro-Tempore Presidency will be assumed by Chile, and the General Assembly in New York.

Regarding bilateral and triangular cooperation, the meeting discussed in detail joint actions in Haiti and the future of MINUSTAH, as well as joint efforts aimed at Central American countries.

With regard to candidacies, Minister Ablonczy offered her country’s support to the nomination of Professor Claudio Grossman for his re-election in the United Nations Committee against Torture, to hold elections on October 18 this year in Geneva, Switzerland.
