Foreign Minister Alfredo Moreno met with UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Kyung -wha Kang, who is on an official visit to our country as part of her South American tour that also includes Paraguay and Uruguay.
Ms. Kang, accompanied by Amerigo Incalcaterra, regional representative of the OHCHR, highlighted the importance of the State of Chile in promoting the protection of human rights, in particular the major role that Chile has had as a member state of the Human Rights Council.
At the meeting, Ms. Kang pointed out that our country, in many ways, has been a model and a leader in human rights issues. This is the very reason why it has been decided to locate the headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Santiago, Chile.
The High Commissioner also expressed her interest in taking a closer look at the agreements on the right to education and the rights envisaged in the international treaties on indigenous people.
