The relation between Chile and Guatemala arises in a context of great proximity in several fields, what makes them develop in a very fluid and close way. Under the administration of President Alvaro Colom, this approach process has intensified by means of the revitalization of the political dialogue in all fields. In addition, through actions in the fields of cooperation and political convergence regarding matters of global interest, laying emphasis on aspects related to integration. Furthermore, the economic-commercial and investments link has experienced a major boost, through the subscription of the Bilateral Protocol between both countries for the Free Trade Agreement between Chile and Central America.
In this context, it is worth to point out the permanent meetings and activities carried out with Guatemala during the last two years, which have contributed in a significant way to this approach.
Within these activities, the significant official visits of H.E. President Bachelet to Guatemala, in March 2007 and the one carried out by H.E. President-Elect Álvaro Colom to our country in December of the same year.
On August 29, 2007, in Guatemala, the IV Meeting of the Binational Commission between Chile and Guatemala took place, headed by the Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Ambassador Alberto Van Klaveren and the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala Luis Fernando Andrade.
In December 2007, the Bilateral Protocol with regard to the FTA with Central America was subscribed between Chile and Guatemala in Santiago.
In January 2008, the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Republic of Chile, Mr. Patricio Walker, visited Guatemala, within the framework of the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony.
In February 2008, a delegation of the Civil Registry and Identification Service of Chile visited Guatemala. On such occasion, an Inter-institutional Cooperation Agreement was subscribed with its Guatemalan counterpart.
Between May 5 and 7, 2008, the Vice-President of the Republic of Guatemala, Rafael Espada visited Chile. On this occasion, Mr. Espada held meetings with H.E. President Bachelet, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alejandro Foxley, and the Minister of Public Works, Sergio Bitar.
Between June 28 and 29, 2008, the Policy Consultation Mechanism Meeting between Chile and Guatemala, at a level of General Directors of the respective Chanceries, was carried out in Guatemala.
Between October 2 and 5, 2008, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Mr. Lars Pira, visited Santiago to participate in ARCO (Latin American-Pacific Arch). The aim was to develop a work program that included meetings with the Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto Van Klaveren, the Minister of National Defense , José Goñi, the Director of ProChile (Export Promotion Bureau) Alicia Frochman, as well as representatives of Fundación Chile XXI (Chile XXI Foundation) and LAN (National Airlines).
