Mr. Mario Ignacio Artaza
Consul General of Chile in New York
Mario Ignacio Artaza is Consul General of Chile as of 16 March 2020. A Chilean career diplomat, he was the first Chilean to graduate from Georgetown Preparatory School in Rockville, Maryland. Upon his return to Chile after more than a decade living in the United States, he studied journalism at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and an MA in International Relations at the University of Chile. He has undertaken postgraduate studies in Austria, Chile and in Singapore.
During his 27 years in the Chilean Foreign Service, he has served at the APEC Secretariat in Singapore (1996-2002); as Director of the ProChile Office in Beijing, the People's Republic of China (2005-2010), and as Consul General of Chile in Hong Kong and Macao (2010-2014). He has been a member of the negotiation teams to achieve Free Trade Agreements with Canada, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Trans Pacific Partnership process (TPP).
Between 2014 and 2017, he took a leave of absence to lead the Representative Office of Banco Security in Hong Kong. During that time he served as President of the Chile Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and as Vicepresident of the Americas Committee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce.
Between 2017 and 2018 he was Executive Director of the APEC Chile 2019 Year. Between April 2018 and March 2020, he served as Deputy Director for Antartica at the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As an academic, he has taught, made presentations and written papers for universities and academies in Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Hong Kong, the People´s Republic of China and in the United States. He has served as Vice President of the Association of Career Diplomats (ADICA) and is currently a member of its Ethics Committee.
